Dealing with Loneliness over the Festive Period

When we think of Christmas, we think of love, laughter and joy, but for many people suffering with loneliness, they can feel even more isolated at this time of year. This year especially, many people have taken the decision to not travel or see family this season. Our social lives are currently restricted and the interactions we do have can feel distanced and abnormal. Here are some suggestions on how you can feel less isolated and feel more connected to yourself and others.

Occupy your time

This sounds like a given, but when we feel lonely it is easy to lose motivation to do things that make us happy. Whether it's getting out in the fresh air or calling loved ones, it is important that you fill your time with things that bring you joy. This is simple self-care, and you will feel all the better for it. You can check out my article 12 Days of Wellness for a whole host of ideas.

Look after your health

Be more considerate of your general health both physically and mentally. Check in with yourself and how you are feeling at the beginning of each day. What does your body need today? Eat the foods that give you the energy you need to get through the day and try and maintain a good amount of exercise.

Connect with others

Current government guidelines are preventing social gatherings however it is important to fulfil that need as part of your lifestyle, especially over the festive period. Perhaps you can open gifts or do some baking at the same time as your friend over FaceTime. Connecting with people you miss is good for your soul and will certainly lift your spirits.

Sleep well, rest well

We all know that sleep is an important factor of a healthy lifestyle, but how much time do you truly dedicate to having a restful night? The restorative cycle of sleep means the body is able to rest, refresh, recover and continue to function normally the following day.

If you are struggling with poor sleep quality, here's how hypnotherapy can help you:

  • Teaching you proper relaxation techniques to help your mind slow down at bedtime.

  • Show you techniques to stop your mind racing along at night when you are trying to get off to sleep.

  • Help you to understand some of the causes of insomnia and sleeping problems.
